Remote Bhutan in the Raw

What you'lll experience with Druk Vice Regents in Luentse:

Location:

In the northeastern corner of Bhutan lies the ancient region of Kurtoe or Lhuntse as it is known today. It is the ancestral home of our Kings and hosts several of the sacred sites of pilgrimage in the country. It is located 77km from Mongar (3 hours’ drive) and is one of the most isolated districts in Bhutan.

Landscape:

The landscape is spectacular with stark cliffs towering above river gorges and dense coniferous forests. The region is famous for its weavers and their distinctive textiles are generally considered to be the best in the country. Kurtoep women are especially adept at weaving a textile called Kishuthara. Eastern Bhutanese culture is distinctive in its high alcohol consumption in relation to other parts of Bhutan. Ara, the traditional alcohol of Bhutan, is most often home made from rice or maize, either fermented or distilled. It may only be legally produced and consumed privately.

Attractions:

  • the Lhuntse Dzong, Khoma village (famous for weaving),

  • Singye Dzong,

  • the beyul Khenpajong

  • the Phunying Pass.

  • The textile products of Khoma village in Lhuntse are stated to possibly be the best in the country. The weaving handicraft looms are common sight in almost every household.

Eco Note:

Most of Lhuntse district is part of the environmentally protected areas of Bhutan. The district contains parts of Wangchuck Centennial Park in the north, Thrumshingla National Park in the south and Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary in the east.

These three parks are connected by biological corridors that crisscross the central and southern regions of the district.

Ancient Gasa

What you'll discover with Druk Vice Regent while touring in Gasa:

Location:

Gasa, the northernmost district of the country adjoins the districts of Punakha, Thimphu and Wangdue Phodrang and with Tibet to its north. This starkly beautiful region with elevations ranging from 1500 to 4,500 m experiences extremely long and cold winters and short but beautiful summers.

Specifics:

It has the smallest population with just about 3000 inhabitants. This region is inhabited by the Layaps; nomadic herders with a unique culture. Their main source of revenue comes from trading products made from their yaks, such as yak hair textiles, cheese, butter and yak meat. They also harvest and sell Cordyceps, (a fungus of extremely high value that is frequently used in oriental medicine). The majority of the known herds of wild Takin also occur in Gasa.

Beauty:

Gasa has become a tourist destination because of its pristine forests and the exceptionally scenic location of its Dzong.  A narrow road from Punakha, which is mostly unpaved, reaches up to the Dzong and is now being extended up to Laya. Gasa Dzong was built by Zhabdrung in 1646 to commemorate the victories over the Tibetans and it later defended the country against several invasions in the 17th and 18th century.

  • Gasa is famously known for its inhabitants, the Layaps

  • The Snowman Trek is one of the most challenging treks in the Himalayas.

  • The newly established festival called the Royal Highlander Festival is becoming more popular each year. Attending this festival allows you to see the real feature of this remote Dzongkhag and should not be missed by travellers.

  • Gasa is also famous for its healing hot springs, located around 2hrs walk at the bottom of the ridge. The hot spring is popular amongst Bhutanese all over the country during the winter.

Foodie Tour of Tsirang

Bumdra-Monastery-Trek-Best-Mountain-Dest

All you can eat - Or Can you Eat it ALL?

Location:
Tsirang District is located in the southwestern part of Bhutan on the Wangdue-Gelephu highway.

Tsirang is noted for its gentle slopes and mild climates. The dzongkhag is also noted for its rich biodiversity, however, it is one of the few dzongkhags without a protected area.
Quirks of Tsirang:

Tsirang is considered one of the breadbaskets of the country, at least in terms of fresh produce for, on the flattened mountaintops, grow a large variety of fresh produce and dairy products abound.
One of Bhutan's longest rivers, the Punatsang Chhu or Sankosh river flows through the district.

Languages:

It is the main district where the Lhotshampas  (Nepali-speaking Bhutanese) reside.

The dominant language in Tsirang is Nepali, spoken by the heterogeneous Lhotshampa. In the north of Tsirang, Dzongkha is also spoken.

Damphu is the administrative headquarters and capital of Tsirang District. It is located on the north-south highway running from Wangdue Phodrang to Sarpang and Gelephu on the border with India. It is also where the Tsirang Dzong is located.

Scenery:

The route from Wangdue Phodrang to Tsirang is quite scenic; one will see one of the largest hydro power projects in the country being constructed. The project is powered by the Puna Tsang Chhu, the river that flows from Punakha.
